DeepSeek App Review 2026: Features, Privacy and Limits

If you’ve landed on this DeepSeek app review, you’re probably weighing DeepSeek’s official assistant against the AI apps already on your phone. This review covers what the iOS and Android app offers, which model runs behind it, what it costs, how it handles your data and who should skip it. It is based on DeepSeek’s official documentation, pricing, policies and store listings as of 22 October 2026. DeepSeek AI Guide does not run its own evaluations, so there are no test scores or timings of ours here.
Our verdict at a glance
Our assessment, based on DeepSeek’s official documentation, its store listings and the public regulatory record as of 22 October 2026: the app is a no-cost way to use DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017, the model behind the deepseek-flash API, with search, photo and file input and a thinking mode. Its limits are privacy, because DeepSeek says it stores personal data in the People’s Republic of China, and reliability, which its terms do not guarantee. It suits technically minded users who keep sensitive data out of it.

Who should use the DeepSeek app — and who shouldn’t
Good fit
- Students and self-learners in maths, science or code: DeepSeek’s published figures for the September V4.1-Flash build include reasoning and maths benchmarks (GPQA Diamond 90.9, MathArena Apex 65.6; Change Log, 10 Sep 2026). Check the working all the same.
- Developers on the move who want a second opinion on a stack trace without spending API credit.
- Budget-conscious users. Neither store listing showed in-app purchases on 22 October 2026, though the terms let DeepSeek change its services (§1.3).
- Users who want a non-English interface. The App Store lists English plus 71 more languages; we make no claim about translation quality.
Poor fit
- Anyone handling client, medical, legal or trade-secret data. DeepSeek’s privacy policy says the service is “not designed or intended to process sensitive Personal Data”. In our assessment, DeepSeek’s privacy posture is not appropriate for regulated workflows.
- Government employees and contractors where DeepSeek is restricted on official devices; see the regulatory section below.
- Writers who need unrestricted content. The terms bar categories such as sexually explicit and hateful content and allow “risk filtering mechanisms” (§3.3–3.4).
- Users who need guaranteed uptime. The terms disclaim uninterrupted service (§8.3), and we could not find a service-level commitment in DeepSeek’s documentation.
How we assessed it
We do not run our own evaluations: we did not score the app, time it or run prompts through it. We read these official sources on 22 October 2026:
- DeepSeek’s API Change Log, entries of 20 Jan 2025, 21 Aug 2025, 24 Apr 2026, 31 Jul 2026, 13 Aug 2026, 21 Aug 2026, 10 Sep 2026 and 17 Oct 2026.
- DeepSeek news pages for R1 (20 Jan 2025), V3.1 (21 Aug 2025), the V4 Preview (24 Apr 2026), V4-Pro GA (13 Aug 2026), V4.1-Flash (10 Sep 2026) and V4.1-Flash-1017 (17 Oct 2026).
- The Models & Pricing page (as of 22 October 2026) and the Thinking Mode, Vision, Multi-round Conversation and Rate Limit pages.
- DeepSeek’s Privacy Policy (updated 10 Feb 2026) and Terms of Use (updated 27 Mar 2026).
- The app’s US App Store and Google Play listings, including version notes and privacy disclosures.
- DeepSeek’s homepage and official status page.
- Hugging Face model cards for DeepSeek-V4-Pro (the V4 Preview) and DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017.
- The Italian data protection authority’s press release of 30 January 2025, and Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s API pricing pages.
What you get in the DeepSeek app
The DeepSeek app is DeepSeek’s official mobile client. On 22 October 2026 the US App Store listed “DeepSeek – AI Assistant” as Free, requiring iOS 15.0 or later, and Google Play listed it under the package com.deepseek.chat with 100M+ downloads. DeepSeek’s description on both stores opens: “Experience seamless interaction with DeepSeek’s official AI assistant for free!”
What DeepSeek’s documentation and store notes say it offers:
- Chat with DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017. Per the Change Log of 17 Oct 2026, “the official web and APP models have also been updated to the new version”.
- A thinking mode that reasons before answering; since iOS version 2.5.0 (11 Sep 2026) the “thinking process now collapses automatically”.
- Search, a function you can enable (terms §5.2). DeepSeek says its web and API search run on its in-house search engine (Change Log, 17 Oct 2026).
- Photo and file input. The terms cover input “including text, images, files, and more” (§1.2), and the iOS notes list “Supports vision mode” (29 Jun 2026) and “Improved photo and file uploads” (28 Jul 2026).
- Voice input, which the privacy policy lists among the inputs DeepSeek may collect.
- Chat history and share links. You can copy or delete chat history in settings (privacy policy) and share a conversation through a unique URL (terms §1.6).
- A 1,000,000-token context window, which DeepSeek made “the default across all official DeepSeek services” with the V4 Preview (24 Apr 2026).
What we could not find: any description of image generation (the terms describe outputs as “text, tables, and code”), or official documentation of widgets, Siri Shortcuts or cross-chat memory.
What DeepSeek’s published benchmarks say
Every figure here is DeepSeek’s own, published in its Change Log.
Coding and agent tasks
For V4.1-Flash-1017, the model the app now uses, DeepSeek reported DeepSWE v1.1 77.0 (Mini-SWE-V2 framework), Terminal-Bench 4.0 42.3 (Claude Code framework), NL2Repo-Bench 68.2 and ProgramBench 29.1 (17 Oct 2026). These measure agentic coding workflows more than quick questions on a phone. If coding is your main use case, pair the app with DeepSeek for coding workflows on desktop.
Mathematical reasoning
For the September V4.1-Flash build, DeepSeek reported GPQA Diamond 90.9, MathArena Apex 65.6, a Codeforces rating of 3471 and HLE 36.8 (10 Sep 2026); for -1017 it reported HLE without tools at 42.6 (17 Oct 2026). See DeepSeek for math for the wider benchmark context.
Writing
DeepSeek publishes no writing-quality benchmark for the current model, and we do not grade prose. If you publish AI-written text, DeepSeek’s terms require you to verify it and label it as AI-generated (§3.1).
Research and web search
DeepSeek’s terms say enabling “Search” may improve accuracy “to some extent”, but that inaccuracy “cannot be entirely avoided” (§5.2). For current events, verify against primary sources: treat the app as a research assistant, not a news feed.
Images, charts and screenshots
DeepSeek describes V4.1-Flash as having “native multimodal visual understanding” (10 Sep 2026) and reported Chartography (with tools) 83.0 and BabyVision (with tools) 92.5 for -1017. On the API, deepseek-flash accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP images, while deepseek-v4-pro is listed without vision support (Models & Pricing and Vision guide, 22 October 2026).
From the V4 Preview to V4.1-Flash-1017 (24 Apr – 17 Oct 2026)
This review first went live on 24 April 2026, the day DeepSeek released the V4 Preview. Since then, per DeepSeek’s Change Log, news pages and iOS release notes:
- 24 Apr 2026, V4 Preview: two open-weight Mixture-of-Experts models, DeepSeek V4-Pro (V4-Pro-Preview, 1.6T total / 49B active parameters) and DeepSeek V4-Flash (V4-Flash-Preview, 284B total / 13B active), offered on the web “via Expert Mode / Instant Mode”, with “Enhanced Agentic Capabilities” headlined for V4-Pro.
- 31 Jul 2026: V4-Flash-0731, an API-only update; DeepSeek said the app and web models were unchanged.
- 13 Aug 2026: V4-Pro general availability (V4-Pro-0813, still the model behind
deepseek-v4-pro), offered in the app and on the web via “Expert Mode”, plus low / high / max thinking effort and peak / off-peak API pricing from 16 Aug 2026. - 21 Aug 2026: V4-Flash-Vision-Exp, an experimental multimodal API model.
- 10 Sep 2026: V4.1-Flash, which DeepSeek described as a 552B-parameter MoE with 8B active parameters for input and 16B for output. V4-Flash was retired, the API name became
deepseek-flash, and DeepSeek claimed V4.1-Flash benchmarks ahead of V4-Pro (a vendor claim). - 11–12 Sep 2026: iOS versions 2.5.0 and 2.5.1, whose notes read “New model update: Instant, Expert, and Vision modes are now unified”.
- 17 Oct 2026: V4.1-Flash-1017 for
deepseek-flashand “the official web and APP models”, with the API calling method and pricing unchanged.
DeepSeek has not restated parameter counts for V4-Pro-0813 or the -1017 build, so the Preview figures should not be read as describing today’s models. The Hugging Face model cards for the V4 Preview and V4.1-Flash-1017 state that the weights are licensed under the MIT License (checked 22 October 2026). See our V4 release coverage for the full timeline.
On the API, both current models use thinking mode by default, with effort “high”; the OpenAI-format fields are "thinking": {"type": "enabled"} (or "disabled") and reasoning_effort (low, high or max). We could not find an official note describing the app’s current mode controls in more detail.
If you maintain older API integrations: the legacy model IDs deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner were retired after 24 Jul 2026, 15:59 UTC (until then they routed to the non-thinking and thinking modes of deepseek-v4-flash). The deepseek-v4-flash name is still accepted, but its model is retired and requests are served by DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 at the Flash price; new code should use deepseek-flash. The base_url is unchanged, but thinking is now the default, so send {"thinking": {"type": "disabled"}} to keep the old non-thinking behaviour.
Value for money
For the app’s store price, see the verdict table near the top of this review. DeepSeek’s privacy policy describes payment data only for “paid services in our open platform”, saying it is “not applicable to DeepSeek App”. We could not find a published message cap for the app.
The API is billed per token, with per-account limits of 2,500 concurrent requests on deepseek-flash and 500 on deepseek-v4-pro (HTTP 429 above that). For developers weighing it for custom workflows, here is an illustrative monthly estimate on deepseek-flash, the cheaper current model, at DeepSeek’s prices as of 22 October 2026. Assumptions: 1,000 calls a day for 30 days; a 2,000-token system prompt that always hits the cache; a 200-token user message at the cache-miss rate; 300 output tokens per call. Peak hours are 01:00–04:00 and 06:00–10:00 UTC, Monday to Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays; other hours are off-peak at half the peak rate.
Calls : 1,000 × 30 = 30,000
Cache hit : 2,000 × 30,000 = 60,000,000 tokens
Cache miss : 200 × 30,000 = 6,000,000 tokens
Output : 300 × 30,000 = 9,000,000 tokens
Peak
Cache hit : 60,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $0.006 = $0.36
Cache miss : 6,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $0.30 = $1.80
Output : 9,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $1.20 = $10.80
Total : $0.36 + $1.80 + $10.80 = $12.96
Off-peak
Cache hit : 60,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $0.003 = $0.18
Cache miss : 6,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $0.15 = $0.90
Output : 9,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $0.60 = $5.40
Total : $0.18 + $0.90 + $5.40 = $6.48
Every line comes out exact to the cent, so nothing needed rounding; a month that mixes both periods lands between $6.48 and $12.96. Thinking mode, the default, outputs a chain of thought before the answer, so budget for more output or send {"thinking": {"type": "disabled"}} for simple summaries. On deepseek-v4-pro the same traffic would cost $46.20 at peak (60 × $0.044 + 6 × $1.32 + 9 × $3.96 = $2.64 + $7.92 + $35.64) or $23.10 off-peak (60 × $0.022 + 6 × $0.66 + 9 × $1.98 = $1.32 + $3.96 + $17.82), with token counts in millions. Its output rate is 3.3× Flash’s ($3.96 vs $1.20 per 1M tokens at peak; $1.98 vs $0.60 off-peak), and only deepseek-flash accepts images.
Chat requests go to POST https://api.deepseek.com/chat/completions (OpenAI format); Anthropic-format requests use https://api.deepseek.com/anthropic. A stripped-down Python example that sets thinking explicitly, as in DeepSeek’s Thinking Mode guide (for a plain summary you could set the thinking type to "disabled" instead):
import os
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(api_key=os.environ.get("DEEPSEEK_API_KEY"), base_url="https://api.deepseek.com")
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="deepseek-flash",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarise this meeting transcript."}],
reasoning_effort="high",
extra_body={"thinking": {"type": "enabled"}},
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.reasoning_content) # chain of thought
print(resp.choices[0].message.content) # final answer
Remember: the API is stateless. DeepSeek’s Multi-round Conversation guide says the server “does not record the context of the user’s requests”, so you resend the history with every request, whereas the app keeps your chat history. For a deeper build-out see our DeepSeek API getting started guide and the DeepSeek API pricing reference.
Privacy, safety and regulatory posture — read this section
- Where your data goes. The privacy policy (updated 10 Feb 2026) names Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. as data controller and says: “we directly collect, process and store your Personal Data in People’s Republic of China.” The terms are governed by the laws of mainland China (§10.1).
- What is collected. Text and voice input, uploaded files, photos and chat history, plus device identifiers, IP address and approximate location. The developer’s App Store privacy disclosure, which Apple has not verified, also lists contact info and search history as data linked to you.
- Model training. The policy says personal data is used to “train and improve our technology”; you can opt out by turning off “Improve the model for everyone” (terms §4.3).
- Shared links. Anyone with a share link can view the conversation, and the terms warn that shared chats posted online may be scraped by web crawlers (§1.6).
The regulatory record is concrete. On 30 January 2025, Italy’s data protection authority ordered, “as a matter of urgency and with immediate effect”, a limitation on the processing of Italian users’ data by Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence and Beijing DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence, and opened an investigation. For US government-device restrictions, see our current tracker at DeepSeek US restrictions.
Practical advice: don’t paste anything into the app you wouldn’t email to a stranger. If that rule is incompatible with your work, this isn’t the tool for you. For a country-by-country status check, see DeepSeek availability by country.
On content filtering: the terms say DeepSeek may review user behaviour “to fulfill legal and compliance requirements”, including through “risk filtering mechanisms” (§3.3), and they list prohibited content (§3.4). We could not find a published list of the topics those filters cover.
The rough edges
- No uptime guarantee. The terms do not warrant “uninterrupted” service (§8.3). DeepSeek’s official status page tracks the chat service, file uploads and search separately from the API.
- No documented image generation. The app reads images, but neither its terms nor DeepSeek’s release notes describe image generation in the app.
- The model changes on DeepSeek’s schedule. The app went from the V4 Preview to V4.1-Flash-1017 in under six months, and the terms let DeepSeek “add, upgrade, modify, suspend, or terminate services” (§1.3).
Competitor context
A full head-to-head is out of scope for this review. For our comparisons see DeepSeek vs ChatGPT and DeepSeek vs Claude, plus the broader DeepSeek reviews hub for related model-level write-ups.
On developer costs, as of 22 October 2026 Anthropic’s pricing page lists Claude Sonnet 4.6 at $3 input / $15 output per 1M tokens and OpenAI’s pricing page lists GPT-5.4 at $2.50 / $15 (short context), against $0.30 / $1.20 at peak and $0.15 / $0.60 off-peak for deepseek-flash (cache-miss input / output). Neither is its vendor’s newest model: Anthropic lists Sonnet 4.6 among its legacy models, and GPT-5.4 is not among the featured “latest models” on OpenAI’s pricing page.
Final verdict
Our assessment, based on DeepSeek’s official documentation, its store listings and the public regulatory record as of 22 October 2026: the app is listed as free, runs DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 with search, photo and file input and a thinking mode, and DeepSeek’s own benchmarks for that model centre on coding, agent and reasoning tasks. Against that, personal data is stored in China and may be used to improve DeepSeek’s models unless you opt out, Italy’s regulator acted against the service in January 2025, and the terms guarantee neither uptime nor a fixed feature set. As a no-cost second opinion and a maths or coding scratchpad for non-sensitive work, it is easy to recommend; it does not belong near client, regulated or confidential data. If that trade-off fits, install it from the official stores; if not, skip it.

Frequently asked questions
Is the DeepSeek app free to use?
On 22 October 2026 the US App Store listed it as Free with no in-app purchases, Google Play showed no in-app purchases label, and DeepSeek’s store description says “for free”. The API is billed separately, per token. For a full breakdown of what is and isn’t gated, see our is DeepSeek free guide, and compare tiers at DeepSeek free vs paid.
How can you tell you’re installing the official DeepSeek app?
Check the developer details against the official listings. On 22 October 2026 the US App Store showed “DeepSeek – AI Assistant” from the developer 杭州深度求索人工智能基础技术研究有限公司 (seller: Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd), and Google Play showed the same name from DeepSeek, package com.deepseek.chat, with the same Chinese company under “About the developer”. Our step-by-step check is at verify the official DeepSeek app.
Is the DeepSeek app safe to use?
The app is distributed through DeepSeek’s official store listings; we have not assessed its security. DeepSeek’s privacy policy says personal data is collected, processed and stored in China, and Italy’s data protection authority ordered a limitation on processing Italian users’ data on 30 January 2025. Keep sensitive data out, and check our DeepSeek US restrictions tracker if you use government devices. See is DeepSeek safe for a detailed risk breakdown.
What does DeepThink mode do in the app?
DeepThink is DeepSeek’s name for its thinking mode, in which the model reasons step by step before answering. At R1’s launch on 20 Jan 2025, DeepSeek pointed users to DeepThink to try R1, then a separate model (deepseek-reasoner on the API, alongside deepseek-chat); from V3.1 (21 Aug 2025), one hybrid model ran both modes via the “DeepThink” button. The V4-era notes describe Expert and Instant modes, unified in the September 2026 iOS update (versions 2.5.0–2.5.1, 11–12 Sep 2026), though DeepSeek’s homepage (updated 17 Oct 2026) still labels a chat-box toggle DeepThink. On the API, thinking is on by default. More in our DeepSeek V4 write-up.
How does the DeepSeek app compare to ChatGPT on mobile?
We have not evaluated either app and do not publish unsourced rankings. For DeepSeek, official sources show a free listing, DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 behind the app (17 Oct 2026) and personal data stored in China. Our DeepSeek vs ChatGPT comparison covers the two side by side.
