DeepSeek: How to Verify the Official App Before You Download

Search an app store for “DeepSeek” and you may see several AI chat apps with similar names and icons, some of them asking for a subscription. Which one is real? That uncertainty is exactly what scammers count on, and it is why this guide on DeepSeek how to verify official app exists. Since the DeepSeek assistant topped Apple’s App Store in the US and UK in late January 2025 (The Guardian, 27 January 2025), security researchers have reported fake installers, lookalike websites and investment scams using DeepSeek’s branding. The store details below were checked on the live listings and DeepSeek’s download page on 24 October 2026.

The short answer: what “official” means for DeepSeek

DeepSeek’s consumer chat comes in two forms: the mobile app (iOS and Android) and the web chat. As of October 2026 it also offers a desktop app for its agent tool, DeepSeek Harness. Everything else — paid “Pro” clones in app stores, “DeepSeek installer” files from random download portals, Telegram bots, browser extensions promising “DeepSeek Premium” — is unaffiliated at best and malicious at worst. The safest starting point is DeepSeek’s own download page at www.deepseek.com/en/download/, which links to the App Store listing, an Android APK and the Harness desktop installers.

Two anchors do most of the verification work:

• Domain: deepseek.com for the company site and download page; chat.deepseek.com for the web chatbot; platform.deepseek.com for the developer console and API keys; download.deepseek.com for the files the download page links to.
• Publisher name in app stores: on Apple’s App Store the “Seller” field reads “Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd” (the US listing’s developer line shows the company’s Chinese name, 杭州深度求索人工智能基础技术研究有限公司); on Google Play the developer is listed as “DeepSeek”, with the website www.deepseek.com.

If the link, the publisher, or the price doesn’t line up with those anchors, stop. The rest of this guide explains how to confirm each one on every platform.

Why this matters: the threat landscape in 2025–2026

DeepSeek’s January 2025 launch drew attention fast, and impersonators followed. On 10 February 2025 Silicon UK reported that DeepSeek had warned of fake social media accounts and websites, saying its smartphone app is free to download, that accounts charging fees are fraudulent, and that it has not issued cryptocurrencies.

Security researchers have since documented several distinct attack patterns. According to McAfee Labs research reported by TechInformed (19 March 2025), installers named DeepSeek-R1.Leaked.Version.exe or DeepSeek-VL2.Developer.Edition.exe connected victims’ systems to attacker-controlled servers and downloaded a “cocktail” of malware, including keyloggers, password stealers and coin miners. Cyber Daily (21 March 2025) added that McAfee saw Android apps using the DeepSeek icon to push unrelated apps.

The crypto angle is even uglier. SecurityWeek (12 March 2025) described a fraudulent site, “deepseek-shares.com”, claiming to sell DeepSeek pre-IPO shares, as well as fake DeepSeek tokens and wallet-draining QR codes, noting that DeepSeek is privately held with no official plans of going public. Any site offering “DeepSeek shares” or a “DeepSeek token” should be treated as a scam.

The 7-point verification checklist

Run through these checks before you tap Install or Run.

1. Confirm the domain. Start from deepseek.com, chat.deepseek.com or platform.deepseek.com. Type them, don’t follow ad links.
2. Check the app store publisher name. App Store: Seller “Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd”. Google Play: developer “DeepSeek” with the website www.deepseek.com. Not “DeepSeek AI Pro,” not “DeepSeek Chat Plus,” not a developer name you don’t recognise.
3. Check the price. On 24 October 2026 the official app was free on both stores, and the App Store listing showed no in-app purchases. A paywall inside an app calling itself DeepSeek is a strong sign you have the wrong one.
4. Confirm the social handles. In February 2025 DeepSeek said it had only three authentic social media accounts — on WeChat, X and RedNote — and warned of imposters charging fees. Its store listings give the X handle @deepseek_ai; its website also links to Zhihu and GitHub. Its April 2026 V4 announcement repeated: rely only on official accounts for DeepSeek news.
5. Reject any “investment” or “token” pitch. DeepSeek said in February 2025 that it has not issued cryptocurrencies, and security reporting describes “pre-IPO share” offers as scams.
6. Reject CAPTCHA-then-keystroke prompts. If a “DeepSeek” page tells you to press Win+R and paste something, close it immediately. McAfee Labs described exactly this pattern on a DeepSeek-themed fake captcha page.
7. Cross-check via Hugging Face or GitHub. The deepseek-ai organisation on Hugging Face (marked verified) and on GitHub both link to www.deepseek.com — useful as an independent reality check.

Platform-by-platform: how to verify on each device

iPhone (iOS App Store)

Open the App Store, search “DeepSeek,” and open the listing named “DeepSeek – AI Assistant”. Scroll down to the “Information” section: the “Seller” field should read “Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd”. As of 24 October 2026 the listing is free, shows no in-app purchases, requires iOS 15.0 or later, and gives [email protected] and X @deepseek_ai as contacts. Its App Store ID, 6737597349, is the one DeepSeek’s download page links to. In the UK storefront the same seller’s app is called “DSeek – Your AI Assistant” (ID 6755107873); the “DeepSeek – AI Assistant” listing does not appear there.

Android (Google Play)

Search “DeepSeek” and open “DeepSeek – AI Assistant”. As of 24 October 2026 the developer is shown as “DeepSeek”, the developer website is www.deepseek.com, the contact email is [email protected], the app is free and the listing shows more than 100 million downloads. DeepSeek’s own download page also links to an APK at download.deepseek.com/apk/deepseek.apk; that is the only APK to trust. “DeepSeek Mod” or “DeepSeek Premium APK” files from other sites are a different app entirely and should never be installed.

Mac and Windows desktops

Be strict here. The App Store listing is built for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch only. For the chat itself on a computer, use the browser at chat.deepseek.com. DeepSeek does publish one desktop app: DeepSeek Harness, its open-source agent tool, in public preview, for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later) and Windows (64-bit). Download it only from www.deepseek.com/en/download/ or www.deepseek.com/en/harness/, which link to files on download.deepseek.com. The web chat

The genuine browser product lives at chat.deepseek.com. Lookalike domains with extra words, hyphens or different endings are third-party at best and phishing at worst. If a “DeepSeek” page is asking you to connect a crypto wallet, scan a QR code to “verify,” or pay to chat, leave.

Side-by-side: official vs fake

Red flags to walk away from

One of the worst patterns was described by McAfee Labs, as reported by Cyber Daily in March 2025: a site called deepseekcaptcha[.]top used DeepSeek’s icons and colour scheme, offered a fake “partner program”, then showed a captcha page asking victims to press Windows+R and CTRL+V to “verify” — and clicking OK installed malware capable of stealing financial data. No legitimate verification flow ever asks you to paste anything into the Run dialog. Close the page.

Two more patterns to refuse on sight:

• Crypto wallet connect prompts. Fake “DeepSeek” sites with wallet-draining QR codes have been reported since early 2025, and DeepSeek has said it has not issued cryptocurrencies.
• “Free Premium” download links from search ads. Ads can outrank organic results during news cycles. If the URL isn’t on deepseek.com or the official app store, ignore it — even if it appears at the top of a search page.

If you already installed something suspicious

Treat it as a credential incident. Three steps in order:

1. Disconnect first. Take the device off Wi-Fi while you investigate. Do not log into anything sensitive in the meantime.
2. Uninstall and scan. Remove the app via the OS uninstaller, then run a reputable on-device antivirus scan. Mobile users should also cancel any subscription in their App Store or Google Play account.
3. Rotate credentials. If you typed an email and password into the fake app, change that password everywhere it was reused, and turn on two-factor authentication where the service offers it. If you connected a crypto wallet, move funds to a new wallet from a clean device.

If the bogus app charged a subscription, you can request a refund through Apple’s Report a Problem page or Google Play’s order history; whether a refund is granted is up to Apple or Google.

Bonus: how to verify the API surface, not just the app

To confirm you are talking to DeepSeek’s real API rather than a proxy: the base URL is https://api.deepseek.com (OpenAI format) or https://api.deepseek.com/anthropic (Anthropic format), and the chat endpoint is POST /chat/completions. As of October 2026 the current model IDs are deepseek-flash (DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017) and deepseek-v4-pro (DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813). The legacy IDs deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner were scheduled for retirement on 2026-07-24 at 15:59 UTC and are no longer listed in the official docs. The API is stateless — your client must resend the full message history with every request, which is the opposite of how the chat app behaves.

If your client is configured with any base URL other than api.deepseek.com, you are going through a proxy or reseller. Get your key from platform.deepseek.com directly, never from a third-party “key reseller.”
