On Terminal-Bench 2 and SWE-Bench Pro (55.4%), V4-Pro shows similarly strong agentic numbers.
Where Copilot still has an edge is in the model variety it can route to: the free tier alone includes access to Claude Sonnet 4.6 and GPT-4.1 in Chat, and Pro+ unlocks all available models, including Claude Opus 4.6 and o3. If a particular task plays better on Opus than on V4-Pro, Pro+ users can switch in two clicks. With DeepSeek you are picking between Pro and Flash, both from the same family.
Honest caveat: on Humanity’s Last Exam V4-Pro scores 37.7% — below Claude (40.0%) and Gemini-3.1-Pro (44.4%) — and SimpleQA-Verified at 57.9% versus Gemini’s 75.6% reveals a meaningful factual knowledge gap. Three things to remember:
- The API is stateless. Unlike the web chat at chat.deepseek.com, the API does not keep conversation history server-side. You must resend the full
messagesarray on every request. - Thinking mode is a parameter, not a separate model ID. Set

This is Copilot’s strongest argument. GitHub Copilot is available as an extension in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Vim, Neovim, the JetBrains suite of IDEs, and Azure Data Studio, with chat functionality currently in VS Code, JetBrains, and Visual Studio. Inline tab completion, chat, agent mode, and PR review are all first-class features inside the editor.
DeepSeek does not ship a first-party VS Code extension at the same level. To get equivalent functionality, you wire the API into a third-party tool — Continue, Cline, Roo Code, or similar — and point it at api.deepseek.com. For terminal and CLI workflows, both products have moved closer. Copilot ships Copilot CLI and is integrated into GitHub Mobile; DeepSeek’s V4 models are optimized for use with popular agent tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenClaw, so any agent that speaks the Anthropic or OpenAI wire format can drive DeepSeek without modification.
Privacy and data handling
This is where company policy matters more than benchmarks.
